I just watched the One Piece movies marathon, and while I found most of them wonderful and funny, there's this one movie that's different and kinda' disturb me -- Movie 6.
Now, I know that many people say that this is the best OP movie around, but I have to disagree. While I applaud the innovative arts and superb animation style, I think it's way too OOC for an OP movie, and I'll tell you why:
1.) The art style reminds me too much of Naruto (I believe I remember reading that the animator/producer/director does some Naruto episodes, though it most reminds me of the ED song arts), and I don't particularly like the sketchy, fluid style. The characters' expressions, in my opinion, are also limited.
2.) The movie is too dark -- the reason I watched OP is because it is one of the few animes that manage to inspire and entertain me at the same time. This movie, while touching and inspirational in nature, lacks the entertainment value, specifically humor.
3.) The characters are way too OOC -- and this is the major turnoff for me. I mean, the part where Nami misunderstood Usopp made her sound like a bratty kid who wouldn't forgive such a simple thing (and it's a misunderstanding too). This contradicts with the fact that Usopp *DID* leave Nami lots of times before for the sake of running away (though yes, he did come back in the end. XD) and Nami never seems to think too much of it. Then there's the part where Sanji seems to get ticked off just because Chopper and Luffy cheered on a cooking performance done by another cook and the part where he said that he didn't wanna cook for people who didn't cheer at him while cooking (what the heck?) -- it's an absolute bull. I don't remember the Strawhat Pirates to be such egotistical, bratty bunch of kids who are borderline EMO and can't handle competitions.
On the other hand, the story is pretty well-done, especially the suspense and ending of the story where all the mysteries were revealed and the audience found a disturbingly dark truth behind the seemingly cheerful crew and place. The filler characters are also funny and nice, and that mustached-man kinda' reminds me of Tezuka's typical character art, which is an added value.
In overall, I think there's nothing wrong with the art and animation style, and the story is pretty touching too -- it just doesn't suit the OP world at large. Thanks for reading this rant...
